North Foreland is a chalk headland on the Kent coast which forms the eastern end of the Isle of Thanet. It presents a bold cliff to the sea, commanding views over the southern North Sea. It also features a lighthouse built in 1860.

The 1860 lighthouse was far from the first to be built there. As demonstrated by this quote from the Trinty House guide to North Foreland Lighthouse.

A light was first exhibited at North Foreland in 1499, but the first real lighthouse was built by Sir John Meldrum in 1636, consisting of a two-storey octagonal tower made of timber, lath and plaster with an iron coal-burning grate on top; this tower was destroyed by fire in 1683.

According to Bygone Kent, the North Foreland Lighthouse was part of the earliest public tests of wireless communication.
